About Speech Audiometry

Speech Audiometry is an important part of a comprehensive hearing assessment that evaluates how a person responds to spoken speech. It may include measurements such as Speech Detection Threshold, Speech Recognition Threshold and word recognition testing. These results complement Pure Tone Audiometry by providing information about how well speech can be detected and understood, rather than measuring hearing sensitivity to tones alone.

How It Works

01

Preparation

You are seated in a quiet or sound-controlled environment and listen through calibrated headphones or suitable earphones.

02

Speech Threshold Testing

Speech material is presented at different listening levels to determine the softest level at which speech can be detected or recognized.

03

Word Recognition

Words are presented at an appropriate listening level and you repeat what you hear so the audiologist can assess speech-recognition performance.

04

Result Interpretation

Your speech-audiometry results are reviewed together with your Pure Tone Audiometry and other relevant hearing-test findings.

Benefits of Speech Audiometry

Speech Understanding

Provides information about how well spoken words can be heard and recognized.

Speech Thresholds

Measures the level at which speech becomes detectable or recognizable.

Complete Assessment

Complements pure-tone testing with information about speech perception.

Hearing Care Guidance

Adds useful information when planning suitable hearing-care strategies.

Communication Insight

Helps relate hearing-test findings to everyday spoken communication.
