About Immittance Audiometry

Immittance Audiometry is an objective audiological assessment used to examine how the middle ear responds to sound and changes in air pressure. Tympanometry measures changes in acoustic immittance while controlled air pressure is varied in the ear canal. Depending on the clinical assessment, acoustic reflex measurements may also be performed to provide additional information about the auditory system.

How It Works

01

Probe Placement

A small, soft probe is placed gently at the entrance of the ear canal to create an appropriate seal for testing.

02

Tympanometry

The equipment changes the air pressure in the ear canal while presenting a probe tone and measuring how the ear responds.

03

Acoustic Reflex Testing

When clinically appropriate, controlled sounds may be presented while the equipment measures changes associated with the acoustic reflex.

04

Result Interpretation

Your audiologist reviews the tympanogram and other immittance measurements together with your hearing-test findings.

Benefits of Immittance Audiometry

Middle Ear Insight

Provides objective information about middle ear function.

Objective Assessment

Requires little active response from the person being tested.

Tympanogram Results

Records middle ear responses as ear-canal pressure changes.

Reflex Information

Acoustic reflex measures can add useful information to the assessment.

Complete Evaluation

Complements other audiological tests for better clinical understanding.
